Artist Statement
I do the work I do because I enjoy working with three dimensional materials rather than two dimensional materials. When working with a three dimensional material such as clay, I can actually get involved and I feel like I am in complete control of my art. I enjoy having control in what I am making because then I can create a piece of art that expresses myself. My artwork is almost always simple. That is something that when I am thinking of a new piece of work to make, I think of a way that I can tie my artwork together by creating another form that is simple but with a twist.
My artwork is always simple forms. Normally, I do smooth, simple forms with some carvings or minor textures. I like my artwork to be simple because I feel that for artwork to be nice it does not need to be covered in carvings and all different colors. Before every piece of work, I create sketches to outline what I will be doing for this project. This helps me think of what to change about my ideas to make them stronger. Generally, most of my projects such as cups and different kinds of pots are made by constructing with slabs. I find this way of creating my work efficient and if something goes wrong, I can always fix the issue.
My current artwork makes me feel happy. I like the simplicity that I use in my work. My inspiration came from the ceramic artist, Sara Paloma. I created a teapot that used ideas from another ceramic artist to help my skills and knowledge about pottery grow. This piece has grown out of my previous artwork and my future artwork will reflect all of my pieces. I want the viewers of my work to be pleased when they look at it. I also created a bust of a human head, with surrealist details to make it look like a cat. When people look at my work, I don't want someones attention to wander to something else, I want it to be directly focused on my artwork. I think that my work is interesting to look at because it is always simple with a unique touch. This unique touch is created my a simple texture or an interesting glaze job. By doing this type of work, I am exploring with a material that isn't as common as the everyday pencil and paper.
